Samsung Set To Boost WiFi Speeds By Up To 5X

Overview: Samsung has recently announced that it has discovered a new method to increase WiFi data transmission speeds by up to five times the current rate. Sound interesting? Check out the blog below to find out more.

Do you think that your WiFi is fast? No matter how speedy your connection is, Samsung is planning on revolutionizing our internet browsing experience. It has developed a new technology that they claim will boost current speeds of around 108MB per second up to around 575MB per second. With these new speeds, it could be possible to download a 1GB file in just three seconds!

Samsung also believes that this 60GHz WiFi technology could allow uncompressed high definition video to be streamed from a mobile to a TV with virtually no delay.

How did they manage this?

This major breakthrough was achieved by removing what's known as “co-channel interference.” Co-channel interference occurs when there are multiple devices, such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, all using the same WiFi connection. This kind of interference is very common as most households have many devices linked up to the same connection. By removing this interference, Samsung has increased WiFi speeds dramatically.

In a press release, Kim Chang Yong, head of DMC Research and Development for Samsung, explained this exciting development:

“Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology [...] New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”

When will we be able to benefit from this technology?

Samsung is planning on releasing devices with this advanced technology as early as sometime next year. However, you will probably have to wait a little longer before this technology becomes common place.

What's the catch?

While this announcement is certainly a huge breakthrough in the Internet network and WiFi world, it appears Samsung's technology may have some limitations. The 60GHz band used by Samsung is free of network interference caused by regular mobile networks and commercial frequencies but as it is a higher frequency its range is much lower than regular 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi technology is use today.

This means that the technology will have to overcome some challenging physical boundaries before it can connect the masses to super-fast five-times faster WiFi.

Bottom Line: This is exciting news from Samsung and it shows a promising future for high-speed network connections. Although it will be a while before this technology makes any impact on the lives of everyday WiFi users, it gives us a glimpse of what the future might hold. Just think back to the days of dial-up internet – seems an age away right? With this new technology on the horizon, our current internet standards may soon become history too!
